چکیده

• We hypothesized that poplar can be useful for the extraction of zinc (Zn) from contaminated soils and water. However, the physiological response and the base of tolerance of poplar plants to this heavy metal are little known. • Plants of Populus deltoides × P . nigra ( P. × euramericana ) I-214 clone were grown in glasshouse and treated with three different Zn concentrations (1, 100 and 1000 μ M ). Growth analysis, Zn concentration in leaves, stem and roots, and photosynthetic parameters were measured at different times of exposure during the annual growth cycle. • Significant reductions in foliage and total dry mass, and impairment of gas exchange properties occurred at applications of 100 μ M and 1000 μ M Zn. Modifications of leaf area, chlorophyll b concentration, diameter at the stem base, and Zn concentrations of old leaves, stem and roots were also shown after Zn treatment. • We concluded that poplar plants have the potential to be used for plantations in Zn-contaminated soils, in the range of tested Zn concentrations.

Responses of Populus× euramericana (P. deltoides×P. nigra) clone Adda to increasing copper concentrations

We investigated the effect of high copper (Cu) concentrations on poplar woody cuttings (Populus× euramericana) clone Adda in order to estimate the degree of metal tolerance. Metal accumulation was also investigated to determine where and to what extent Cu is stored within the plant. Plant responses to Cu were determined comparing biomass growth and photosynthetic potential measured at concentra...

Differences in the kinetics and scale of signalling molecule production modulate the ozone sensitivity of hybrid poplar clones: the roles of H2O2, ethylene and salicylic acid.

Hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)), ethylene, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) and salicylic acid (SA) concentrations and ACC synthase (ACS) gene expression were measured to establish whether the high sensitivity of the Populus deltoides x maximowiczii clone Eridano to ozone (O(3)) exposure, compared with the O(3)-resistant Populus deltoides x euramericana clone I-214, is attributable to d...

Heavy metal accumulation and growth responses in poplar clones Eridano (Populus deltoides × maximowiczii) and I-214 (P. × euramericana) exposed to industrial waste

In this study, the effects of non-hazardous levels of heavy metal (Zn, Cu, Cr and Cd)-enriched organic waste on biomass partitioning and heavy metal accumulation in plant organs in July and October were determined for two poplar clones (Populus deltoides × maximowiczii—clone Eridano and P. × euramericana—clone I-214) commonly used in Italian poplar plantations. Soil amended with the industrial ...

Clone history shapes Populus drought responses.

Just as animal monozygotic twins can experience different environmental conditions by being reared apart, individual genetically identical trees of the genus Populus can also be exposed to contrasting environmental conditions by being grown in different locations. As such, clonally propagated Populus trees provide an opportunity to interrogate the impact of individual environmental history on c...

Could the differences in O(3) sensitivity between two poplar clones be related to a difference in antioxidant defense and secondary metabolic response to O(3) influx?

Increasing global background concentrations of tropospheric ozone (O(3)) are expected to affect both crops and forest ecosystems negatively. The phytotoxic effects of O(3) are mainly associated with the O(3)-induced production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in excess of the ability of the plant to maintain ROS below the tolerance threshold. It is the balance between O(3) uptake and cellular a...
